Welcome to My Yorkie Care!

August 12th, 2008 by admin

Our goal at My Yorkie Care is to bring you the best and latest information about how to care for Yorkies. If you are looking for a good place to find a little bundle of joy of your own, and you do not know where to start, we recommend you begin at http://www.petfinder.com/. They will do their best to find just the right dog for you. These dogs are in need of a good home. Most are rescues, therefore they may come with certain problems. You must have much love and lots of patience if you chose to adopt.

We DONOT recommend buying from local pet shops, as many of them buy from puppy mills (where dogs are treated inhumanely and the conditions are deplorable). Dogs purchased from puppy mills often have many physical problems, as the dog grows older. Puppy mills will be discussed in greater depth in a later article.

If you love Yorkies as much as we do, you will want to visit our site often for topics such as exercising, training, tips on house breaking, Yorkie care, Yorkie grooming and food and treats to feed your Yorkie!

On The Way To Rainbow Bridge by Codie

September 16th, 2009 by admin

10/23/2008 – 07/24/2009

I stopped by to see my Aunt Sue on the way to Rainbow Bridge and asked her if she would please type this letter for me, ‘cause I am too young to learn to write on the computer. So she is writing this note to you all for me ’cause my Mommy is too upset to talk to you right now. However, before I tell you about my last ride. I want to share a little of my life story with all of you who have never met us in person.

I flew with my sister Maya from California to Tennessee to my new home, with Mommy Becky. She was so nice and had lots of furry friends for us to play with. I romped and played as much as I could, but while we were flying it was so cold and my sister and I both got very sick. I seemed to be getting better and I wondered if I would stay with Mommy Becky.  After awhile my Real Mommy and Daddy, John & Linda, came to pick me up and took me to Port  St. Lucie , FL. When I met them I was so excited and fell in love with them immediately, but I got sicker with pneumonia and did not know how long I would get to stay.  They took me to some wonderful doctors who did their best to help me get better, but I did not like it there because my Mommy and Daddy were not there with me.  They were finally able to take me home and they took such good care of me! They took turns staying up with me  to make sure I was okay. I finally did get well.  I love them both so much, but I especially love my Daddy!! He is the best Daddy in the world and I always looked forward to being with him when he came home from work.  We would sit in his recliner and I would lay on his chest and we watched our favorite TV shows, with lots of action packed stuff, but we didn’t get to see how they’d end too much, ’cause we’d usually fall asleep, that’s a guy thing, Hee, Hee!!. Of course we both love Mommy, because she spoils us so much. She was always bringing home a new toy for me. She knew just what I liked and I had so much fun running and playing and chewing on them, and anything else I could get my mouth on, Hee, Hee !! I love to play with her and tease her.  She is so much fun to tease and run from when she calls you.  She always makes me laugh when she cannot catch me.  I was pretty good at dodging Daddy’s grasp, too.  I loved to grab tissues, wee wee pads and house slippers and run and run around the house because I knew they would not be able to catch me!! It was so much fun and I laughed a lot with them when we all played together.  One of my favorite games was “Catch Me If You Can!” that we would play when we went outside in my little yard. I would grab a leaf off of the ground and they would try and catch me to get the leaf out of my mouth. I pretended we were playing football and I was running for a touch down, and of course I always out ran them and scored points each time, Hee Hee!! They gave me such a wonderful life filled with SOOOOO much love and joy. Oh, yeah, one thing I almost forgot, THE CLOTHES. She was always buying me t-shirts and sweaters, I didn’t like them much at first, but it was okay after awhile and they kept me warm when I was so sick.  I hope someday you can meet My Mommy and Daddy yourself, I know you will love them like I do.

Last week we went back to visit Miss Becky and all her furry friends. While we were there Mom got a new baby sister for me to play with, her name is Kaylee. She loves to romp and play, like me. We also visited my niece, Xena in South Carolina, boy did we have fun running and playing at Jeff and Shelly’s house. Our last stop on our trip was to Miss Donna’s where I had the BEST time with Winky, ’cause he was closer to my size (Xena weighs about 22 pounds and I only weigh 4.5 pounds!!) WE ran and ran and ran and played.  It was such great fun, I will never forget my friend Winky!! Then we headed home with our new family member in tow.

My Mommy was always telling me not to eat things on the floor and would chase me and grab me and take them out of my mouth, but I thought I was smarter than her and did not always listen. I ate something I found on the floor that I thought would taste good, I’m not sure what it was, but it made me very sick.  Mommy and Daddy took me to the doctor and she gave me shots(which I did not like), took my temperature(that was pretty awful too) and got medicine to take at home. I just kept getting sicker and could not eat anything. They finally took me to the Pet Emergency Hospital last night and they operated on me. The doctor there was so nice and tried everything she could to keep me alive and comfortable, but I wanted my Daddy and Mommy, so I waited for them to come and get me this morning.  I saw my Daddy and he told me how much he loved me and I REALLY love him and got to say goodbye to him before he had to go to work.  Then my Aunt Sue was driving my Mommy and I to see Doctor Mary, but I just could not go on anymore. I knew I was in my Mommy’s arms and oh, how she loved me and stroked my head and gave me kisses one last time, then I knew I could go on to Rainbow Bridge to see my big brother Bear, my sister Missy and my grandma Cookie, who I know will keep a watchful eye on me and make sure I mind, until our Mommy and Daddy come to be with us forever.  Do not weep for me, because I am no longer in any pain and I am having so much fun running and playing with all my fur baby friends at Rainbow Bridge, but I would appreciate it if you would pray for my Mommy and Daddy ‘cause they are sad and are missing my mischievous ways and I will certainly miss them. But I am so happy that my new little sister, Kaylee will be there to help them through this hard time,(‘cause I showed her a few ways to make them laugh, before I left, but don’t tell Mommy and Daddy, it’s our secret!!) and I know that she will get to grow up in the BEST home in the world with the greatest parents.  I cannot wait to see them all again.

Love to You All and see you at Rainbow Bridge

The Rattlesnake Bite by Tykes owner Judy Chisholm- They Live in Arizona

October 31st, 2008 by admin

The day I brought, my little Yorkie, Tyke to the vet was a scariest day I think I have ever had in my life. Tyke needed his teeth cleaned very badly. When I saw blood in his mouth I assumed he had an abscessed tooth. I called the vet and got him to have it checked. I told them it seemed like a tooth to me but his tongue was black, which wasn’t normal of course. The vet was waiting for me when I arrived and quickly got him in the back. She came out and told me a small rattlesnake bit him. This in itself is scary because we are told they are more deadly than the bigger ones. She asked for my permission to do the work needed on him. The first thing I asked is ‘Are you sure? And can you save him?” She said she was pretty sure she could. I gave my permission and had to sign a document and estimate that ran between $1,400 and $4,000. It depended on exactly what had to be done and how severe it was.

The first thing I did was call the support group for prayers for Tyke. He needed them badly. I was so afraid of losing him. He is my heart and my best therapy dog (I take him to nursing homes for therapy for seniors, he went to school and is certified). They told me they had to keep him there and monitor him. He was bitten twice, once on the neck and once in the mouth. They told me it looked as if he had the snake in his mouth, and was shaking it trying to kill it, when the fangs got him on the left side of the throat and the right side of the mouth. They said if he made it through the night he would have a chance of surviving. The horrible thing about this is that it was at least 24 hours old. I had no idea he was bitten. My yard is so secure that was the last thing I ever thought about. I felt horrible that I didn’t know. They told me it was a dry bite and that the venom that he got was what was on the end of the fang. He never got the whole dose, and that was a good thing. What wasn’t good was that the venom he had in him was going through his system. I only knew what full venom snake bites looked like not a dry bite as they are called. I had never seen a dry bite.

The inside of his mouth was all black and including his tongue. They were afraid of the tissue being dead which meant he wouldn’t be able to use it. The outside of him was black from the chin to the middle of his belly. He had lots of damage. If there was tissue damage and he lived, he would need extensive surgery to get rid of the “dead” tissue including his tongue. This was not good. All this was explained to me before I left the office. They called me at 5 PM to say he was doing well. They couldn’t use the anti-venom on him because the bite was more than 12 hours old. They were flushing out his system and he was given a very strong antibiotic. The night tech was going to call me at 9PM when she did the checks again. She said he was doing fine and eating. He was also urinating and he did poop. That was a good thing. If he were not going to be doing well I would have to run up to get him to the 24 hours emergency place, which is 1-½ hours from me. I was assured that he was doing fine and he should be OK. In the morning they were going to do some blood tests to see where we stood on that and to see if there was any internal organ damage.

They called to let me know that he made it through the night and was eating his food. They gave him this high calorie canned food and they said he lapped it up. So he still had use of his tongue. I was also told that they might keep him there for observation for a couple of more days. I told them as long as he would be OK that was all right with me. My main concern was that he would be in a mess with all the venom damage and he would need lots of surgery. I asked if I could come to visit him in the afternoon. They told me to come about 4 PM and they would arrange it.

I arrived at 4PM and they said they were just going to call me. I panicked. “What happened is he OK?” They said he was fine and they were just going to let him come home! Dr Humphrey said that anything they could do for him I was qualified enough to do at home. If there were any problems, I would need to rush him back into the office. I had to bring him back in 2 days for another blood test to see what the levels were. She told me to mix some of the canned food with some crunchies, that his mouth should be OK to chew it. I had to keep checking the vitals, any trouble with breathing or anything I was to bring him back. I was crying so hard when I found out that he was going to live. I loved on him all night. I called my chat group and I could hear the cheers they were doing for him from the distance. I know I couldn’t have made it through this without them.

It has been 6 weeks now and he is doing fine. The hair on his neck and chest have not grown in as yet. It may never come back, but I don’t care. I have my boy with me, that’s all that matters. Since this bite I have checked everywhere to see where it could have gotten into my yard. I could not find anything that was suspect. I did re-mesh the whole area again. I used smaller mesh and did it over the other to make it even more secure. Here in the desert nothing is 100%. If these desert dwellers want in, they will get into anyplace. I do hope I never, ever have to go thru this again. It was the scariest day ever.

My little Yorkshire Terrier, Tyke is back to work now doing his visitation therapy at the nursing homes again. He just loves to dress up and go meet all the patients. They can’t wait to see him either and see what kind of “costume” he will be wearing. I think he is part cat. He has nine lives for sure. He is my little boy who gets into the most trouble. Tyke being the strong boy that he is, healed quickly and the vet bill was under $1,000. That is almost unheard of with snakebites. I have to thank the quick thinking of Dr. Humphrey to know what to do in this kind of freaky situation. Being an old bite was the worst and now I check the little ones over every time I see them just to be sure. Being paranoid? You bet!

A Day in the Life of an Extrordinary Dog.

October 2nd, 2008 by admin

Meet Jack. Captain Black Jack..Pirate dog of the 7 seas….or at least the living room.

Jack lost his leg after being hit by a car. The previous owners took him to a vet and said,”Do what you want with him. We don’t want him.”

It was through a wonderful amount of donated time, patience, and love from that vet that Jack could live. Even if it meant losing his leg.

It was through my Aunt of the “Save a Yorkie Rescue” that I first heard of him. I wanted him immediately.

So here he is. Healthy and happy. Like his girl. =]

Tribute to Indy by Shelly McCauley

September 8th, 2008 by admin

Jeff and I really never knew how much our precious little Yorkie, Indy meant to us until we had to make a decision that would forever change our lives. He came to us through the ASPCA, as he was found wandering the streets on the West coast of Florida. He was so shy when he first entered our lives. We believe he was severely neglected by the way he interacted with people. After much tender loving care by Jeff’s mom he soon became a friendly, sweet little member of our family.

Indy awakened Jeff several times in the middle of the night to go outside, and to get a drink of water, as he loved his water! When it came time for him to eat he would let you know. He would begin barking an hour or so early, dancing around and nudging your leg. Indy never really barked much, but when he wanted something he would let you know.

We knew something was really wrong when Indy started pacing and whimpering. I contacted the vet near our home and ended up taking him into see what was wrong with him. The news we received was not good. He had cancer and kidney failure. We had to make a decision for the sake of Indy. We cried at the thought of losing him, but knew what we had to do. Jeff took off from work to be with us at the vet’s office. Indy knew he was LOVED! I held him close to me the whole time, telling him that we all love him as he fell asleep. Losing a dearly loved pet is just like losing one of your family members. It is a very heart wrenching experience for all involved.

Indy came to Jeff’s mom, Linda, a scared little man, but with lots of love and time he came out of his little shell and learned how to show love back. The people who turned their backs on Indy many years ago did not know what they were missing.

Indy’s ashes will be spread out over the mountains of North Carolina. He will be free once more to romp and play with the big dogs, and I am sure he will keep them in line :)

Again, thank you to all of you for doing what you do in giving four legged souls another chance at a better life. We do miss Indy, but his time had come and we didn’t want him to suffer, not even for one more day for our sake.

How to Get Rid of Fleas

How To Get Rid Of Fleas

Below are some questions I ran into on How to get rid of fleas
Question:

My house is infested with fleas! I have never had fleas before I moved into this house. I bought flea collars for the dogs and flea spray made especially for cats, and some spray for the carpet, but what else can I do? I need all the help I can get! Thanks.

Answers by various people about how to get rid of fleas:
If you don’t want to use frontline or that other chemical they have (can’t think of the name right now) you might try setting off a bug bomb (get everyone including pets, out of the house first), give dogs baths (with flea shampoo), and that ought to solve the problem.
When my house was infested (many years ago) I got some bombs, spray, and shampoo from the vet. I bombed the house and the inside of my car, because the dog was in there a lot. Worked great, and I have been using frontline type flea control ever since. Only have to go through it once to learn…what a royal pain! The vacuum is your friend right now too. Get every nook and cranny.
Flea collars are a scam. Get the between the shoulder flea drops and put it on the pets or animals and start vacuuming every day for a month, and that should get rid of the problem.
All the above answers are very good to some degree when it comes knowing how to get rid fleas as part of your Yorkie care; the one thing that is missing is the follow up. You must repeat the process in 2-3 weeks to be successful. You really only need to vacuum a couple of times, more important is to get the bag out of cleaner or dump contents outside in a plastic bag and throw into the garbage. Fleas will escape out of a vacuum cleaner. My wife and I have a Yorkshire Terrier and we have no problems with fleas by following the above information.
Remember this if you cannot get rid of the problem, please call a professional exterminator, so that the animals will not be miserable.
Good luck to you!
